Stephanie Brody Lederman

"I want to show the poetry inherent in ordinary life. I wish to memorialize simple times when we are most present; for example- when we are mesmerized by the beauty of a blooming tree, or a small patch of high loopy grass, growing out of a marshy landscape
I use simple images; vases of flowers, trees in bloom, birds, the night sky, and I edit and hone them to reveal graphic and psychological content.
Words are very much a part of my art making arsenal. I distill them, often finding double entendres that are both aural and visual. Using words in a surrealist, nonlinear way. Beckett, Pinter, Duras and Albee are my heroes. And….”new wave” cinema sets the table, so to speak, for my work – Rohmer, Truffaut, Fellini inspire me. (As an aside, I long ago lived near the Thalia movie theater in NYC and was a more than frequent patron!)
As for the surface of my work, I am interested in the peeling walls of ancient cities. These rich graphic textures, beautifully depict for me, the passage of time.
But most importantly, I never want to lose ‘the mark of the hand,’ in my work - that very special awkwardness that celebrates our common humanity." - Stephanie Brody Lederman
