We can honestly say that this was a life-changing, thought-provoking experience and we have not stopped thinking about it since we saw it. With the very wonderful and knowledgable Mia as our docent, we explored the art and craft of Sonya Clark. In speaking of her upbringing, Ms. Clark states, "I was born in Washington, DC to a psychiatrist from Trinidad and a nurse from Jamaica. I gained an appreciation for craft and the value of the handmade primarily from my maternal grandmother who was a professional tailor. Many of my family members taught me the value of a well-told story and so it is that I value the stories held in objects.”
The stories held in objects is the cornerstone of Ms. Clark's work allowing the viewer to think deeply of the two concepts woven together through the lens of history and the Black experience in America.
Enjoy these photos from this incredible exhibition. Our heartfelt gratitude to Ms. Clark and to the Museum of Arts and Design for its excellent presentation of her work.
