Sue Ferguson Gussow

Sue Ferguson Gussow, a figurative painter. works in a wide range of drawing and painting media. She is Professor Emerita at The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture of The Cooper Union where she continues to conduct The Advanced Drawing Seminar. She has taught, lectured, or served as visiting critic at Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Bennington, Maryland Art Institute, Pratt Institute, RISD, Parsons School of Design, Tulane, New York University, Alfred University, University of Pennsylvania, the Frick Collection, Stony Brook University, the Royal Danish Academy School of Architecture (Copenhagen, Denmark), the Aarhus School of Architecture (Aarhus, Denmark), the EPFL School of Architecture (Lausanne, Switzerland), and the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, (Vienna, Austria).

Numerous museums and collections holding her work include the Brooklyn Museum; the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum; Dallas Museum of Fine Art; Seattle Art Museum; New Orleans Museum of Art; New Orleans Jazz Museum; Philadelphia Free Library; Frick Collection Archive; and the Museum of Modern Art lending collection.

Private collections in which her work is represented are those of the CBS Building, Schuyler B. Chapin, Francois and Susan De Menil, Diana and David Rockefeller Jr., Mary Schmidt Campbell, Jane and Morley Safer, Nader Tehrani, Grahame Shane and Regina Wickham, and the estates of Dore Ashton, Werner Kramarsky, Van Deren Coke, Carl Djerassi, Jeanette Rockefeller, Werner Muensterberger, and John Q. Hejduk.

Her notable solo exhibitions include those at the New Orleans Museum of Art (1966); Stanford Museum (1983),honoring her year at Stanford University as the Pamela Djerassi Visiting Artist (1982-83); a 40-Year Retrospective in the Arthur A. Houghton Jr. Gallery at The Cooper Union (1997), reviewed in The New York Times by Paul Goldberger; and the Center for Contemporary Art (Bedminster, New Jersey, 2015), reviewed inThe Star Ledger by Dan Bischoff; a solo exhibit at Front Art Space (Manhattan, April 2017), reviewed in LUXE by Barbara Stehle. A 50 Year Retrospective mounted in the Houghton Gallery, October - November 2023 has been reviewed in the November 2023 issue of Architectural Record by Mathew Marani. A catalog of the Retrospective will be in print Spring, 2025 with critical essay by Barbara Stehle.

Gussow is the author of Draw Poker (The Cooper Union, 1997) and Architects Draw (Princeton Architectural Press, 2008). A second expanded edition of Architects Draw (Publisher B/Gilbert Hansen, Copenhagen and The Cooper Union) was launched November 2023.

In 2017 Gussow was honored by alumni of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture with the endowed Sue Ferguson Gussow Scholarship, awarded annually.
