A blank sheet of paper waits. What happens next is up to us.
We write on it, draw on it, fold it, tear it, cut it apart and put it back together. We trust it with our ideas, our memories, our plans—and things that do not yet exist. So familiar that it nearly disappears from view, paper has accompanied our lives all along.
In PAPERWORKS, Diane Love, Linda Miller, Regina Sender Levin, Janice Stanton and Ellen Wiener turn our attention back to this most everyday of materials and its seemingly endless capacity for transformation. Across the exhibition, paper shifts between surface and substance, image and object. It is cut, layered, folded, painted, assembled, obscured and revealed.
What connects these distinct approaches is paper’s willingness to become something else without entirely surrendering what it has been. Paper cannot forget what it held—or who held it. A fold leaves a line, a tear creates an edge, handwriting preserves the movement and pressure of a hand. Even as it is transformed, paper carries traces of what came before while remaining open to what might happen next.
