Catherine Latson

"Color choice is consistently my first step into a piece.  I muse about color combinations endlessly and am always looking for combinations that 'sing.' My favorite pairing?  Lilac and chartreuse."

Inspired by the macro- and microstructures of living organisms, Latson’s work explores forms that blur the lines between animal and plant, realism and fantasy, sculpture and specimen. While materials are simple (embroidery floss and wire), construction is complex, entailing thousands of pieces and countless hours of whipping and knotting. Each piece aims to reimagine the mystery and complexity of a living organism in motion and to renew a sense of wonder and respect for the smallest creatures among us.

"Earth’s ecosystems are a delicate balancing act. From the urban to the aquatic, the rainforest to the savanna, we are all connected. Scientists repeatedly demonstrate how the loss of a single species can threaten the survival of an entire ecosystem. Often, it is the frequently overlooked “little guys”, the micro-creatures, the algae, fungi, and plankton, that hold these systems in check. Without them, the ecosystems fail. From the whales to the algae, we are all connected."
