Janice Stanton

Janice Stanton is a collage artist and fine art photographer. Born in Montreal, Canada, she now works from studios in New York City and Bridgehampton, N.Y., U.S.A.

In 2021, Ms. Stanton was selected for the Visiting Artists and Scholars Program at the American Academy in Rome.

Previously, she studied at The Art Students League, The International Center of Photography, the School of Visual Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, NYU, and the Victor D'Amico Institute of Art. She participated in intensive photography workshops with renowned photographers Mary Ellen Mark (Oaxaca, Mexico), Sally Gall (Croatia), Peter Turnley (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) among others.

Her in-depth travel experiences, passion for cultural exploration, and refined eye inform her work in all media. 'Painting with paper', her work is a poetic interplay of fragility and strength. Her process involves layering, inviting the viewer to consider 'what lies beneath' and to experience both presence and absence. Recurring themes are knowability, memory and the human condition.

Her collages have been featured in many solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad. She is among the contemporary artists included in the 2020 volume HAMPTON ARTISTS: THE CURRENT WAVE.

“From the time I first began using a camera, I began to see the world differently. That experience of discovery, the opportunity to communicate visually, and the myriad possibilities of artistic expression are why I make what I make.

Blurring the boundaries between drawing, painting, photography and collage, I seek to create something revelatory. I am keenly interested in the interplay of words, ideas and visual imagery. Among the elements in my collages are found objects, pieces of my own photographs, text, markings made with my own hand, and the detritus of daily life, much of which suggests a nostalgic hint of the past.

Paper is my paint. I am drawn to its formal and sensuous possibilities; to its fragility and its strength. My process involves layering, the juxtaposition of contrasting materials, extending the composition beyond the mat opening, or collaging the mat itself, all of which have metaphorical as well as formal significance.

My photographs often focus on a particular detail or moment to extract the essence of the subject or to capture something extraordinary in the ordinary. I invite the viewer to engage in slow, contemplative looking, and allow the gap between art and life to dissolve.

Recurring themes are knowability, memory and aspects of the human condition.”
